Deep Portage Learning Center

Deep Portage Learning Center is definitely a gem of the Leech Lake area.

If you own real estate on Leech Lake, Woman Lake, Ten Mile Lake, or any of the area lakes, you have visitors.  Deep Portage Learning Center offers a variety of activities for you and your guests.  As mentioned on their website, Deep Portage Learning Center (Deep Portage) offers hiking trails, an interpretive center, and educational programming year-round. 

Deep Portage is located near Hackensack in the Leech Lake area and has over 6,300 acres to explore. Along the almost 11 miles of hiking or cross-country ski trails, you can see lakes, rivers, and bogs.  The trails are well marked and are classified from “Easy” to “Most Difficult”. 

As a residential learning center, Deep Portage has so much to offer. They have summer youth camps as well as family and group educational opportunities, such as, retreats, weekly classes, demonstrations, and displays.  You can learn about animal signs, birds, and bogs.  The “classrooms” are mainly outdoors – and all about outdoor activities and the environment.  They offer:

• youth fishing camps,
• a compass schoolyard,
• an orienteering course,
• forest management courses, and
• so much more.

In addition, Deep Portage has day and evening classes and activities. Examples of their classes:  canoeing classes; rock climbing class and wall; and a water quality course that includes information about the effects of acid rain on the environment and how water pollution affects animals and plant populations.  You can also learn to identify local trees and take a papermaking class…and so much more!
