The MN fishing opener is a really big deal! That’s an understatement – it’s a HUGE deal; if you fish the opener, you are already starting to prepare and are getting excited! Could this be the year you catch the biggest walleye AND the most walleyes? I hope so.
According to the DNR, Minnesota has about 1.4 million licensed anglers! Most of us are getting ready for May 12, 2018, fishing opener. That’s the day in the Leech Lake area that you can keep Walleyes, Sauger, Northern Pike, and, of course, panfish. Many of us have favorite spots to fish. Every year we get up early…or don’t go to bed…to make sure we get on the lake and are the first boat on our favorite spots.
Getting to our favorite spots this year could be difficult for some anglers in the Leech Lake area. Yup, ice out is late this year. All is not lost, however, the DNR has information about 9 public access sites on Leech Lake. Eight of the sites are boat landings. Some of us may have to launch our boats from a different boat landing than usual just to get to our favorite spots…or we’ll have to find a new favorite spot. Of course, Leech Lake isn’t the only lake in the area; we have a lot of lakes to choose from!
The Woman Lake Chain with about 6450 acres is one of the many fishing lakes in the area. Woman Lake has 2 public access sites. The Walker Area Fisheries operates a walleye-spawn take option on the Woman Lake Chain – so you know there are walleyes in Woman Lake!
Be sure to check the fishing regulations for each lake you fish. Because of late ice out on many lakes, also check with the DNR for fishing seasonal closures. To protect fish spawning areas, some areas are closed. For instance, fishing near the Boy River at the Child Lake outlet to Woman Lake inlet is closed May 12 through May 18.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE ANGLERS!
