Memorial Day is a day to remember men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Although Memorial Day has been observed since 1868, it wasn’t until 1971 that it became an official federal Monday holiday. According to the U. S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, between 1775 and 1991 almost 42 million American’s have served in the military. That’s an incredible number of incredible people. Almost 1.2 million men and women have lost their lives in battle, in theater, or in service non-theatre. They lost their lives to ensure our freedom.
